About Yangon Zoo

Yangon Zoo was established under British Colonial rule in 1908 as the Victoria Memorial Park and Zoological Gardens, a name which was later changed to simply Yangon Zoological Gardens. The zoo originally covered an area of 17 hectares and the main attraction was the white elephant which had been owned by the last King of Burma whom the British had forced into exile. Since 1908 the zoo has expanded to 28.02 and now features an aquarium, a natural history museum with a lot of stuffed animals and birds, and an amusement park. The zoo now has over a 1,000 mammals, reptiles and birds, many of which are native to Asia and some of which are classed as endangered species including tigers and marsh crocodiles. Yangon Zoo is a popular attraction with local people receiving more than 2 million visitors a year.
